Taxes & spending Leans agree· based on record

Statement: "Cutting taxes should be a top priority, even if it means less government spending on services."

In November 2023 he was part of the 4-1 majority that declined to put a proposed half-cent sales tax for roads (about $2.1 billion over 20 years) on the ballot. He says the county budget has very little fat and hard choices must be made on priorities.

"We currently operate with very little fat in our budget, so we would definitely have to roll our sleeves up and make hard decisions based on our priorities."

Environment & water Leans agree· based on record

Statement: "Protecting water quality, conservation land and climate resilience should take priority even if it slows development or raises costs."

In March 2022 he was one of three commissioners in a 3-2 vote to put the environmental lands property tax on the ballot; voters approved it, and he chairs the advisory committee that recommends land purchases under the program.

"I am committed to responsible growth while at the same time being mindful of our need to protect our natural resources"

Growth & development Mixed / neutral· stated position

Statement: "Growth and development should be slowed or more tightly regulated (higher impact fees, density limits, stronger local control)."

Describes himself as supporting 'responsible growth' backed by infrastructure funding and a positive business climate. He notes most new homes are approved by cities, and cites his July 2022 vote to deny a 242-home subdivision in rural Kathleen as incompatible with the area.

"I believe in responsible growth. Growth that is manageable and makes a positive impact on our county. Responsible growth means supporting infrastructure needs and funding for them."

Crime & policing Leans agree· stated position

Statement: "Criminal penalties should be tougher and police funding increased, rather than emphasizing reform and rehabilitation."

Calls public safety his first priority, describing himself as a strong supporter of law enforcement, fire and emergency services, and says he wants to hire more firefighters and EMS personnel.

"My priority is now and has always been safety. I am a strong supporter of law enforcement, fire and emergency services."
